Welcome to the West Somerset Mineral Railway Learning Resources


The learning resources in this section has been produced as a result of the Heritage Lottery funded West Somerset Mineral Railway Project. 


The Project enabled local schools to trial the Mineral Line curriculum, the results of which can be seen here in the finished teachers' packs.  


The packs were created by the Education Officer for the WSMR Project in conjunction with other environmental educators including the Careymoor Environmental Trust, the Somerset Wildlife Trust and the Field Studies Council.




Content Overview


  • Teachers' Packs  - 5 Key Stage 2 packs introduce the West Somerset Mineral Railway and enhance students’ visits to the various sites along the Mineral Line with activities, resources and illustrations.

  • Interactive resource  - 

    • Fly over the Mineral Line - get a birds’ eye view from the Brendon Hills all the way to Watchet.

    • Meet the miners – let characters from the Railway tell you their stories.

    • Interviews – find out about conservation and history from the experts.

  • Case study – find out how the teachers and pupils of Danesfield Middle School explored the Old Mineral Line. (See below)

Case Study

In 2008 and 2009 the Year 5 pupils at Danesfield Church of England Middle School in Williton Somerset participated in the Mineral Line Curriculum. They trialled the activities now found in the WSMR teachers’ packs, and used the Mineral Line as the focus of their history studies and trips.
